His father had died and he was sent to the priest to help him. “He told me that he was going to be my spiritual director and that God had told him that he was going to be my new dad. I thought he was a saint.”

But then, Juan Carlos did not anticipate what was to come: years of sexual and psychological abuse. Nor did he imagine that 20 years later his testimony would be crucial to chart before the United Nations Committee Against Torture the alleged network of concealment and cover-up implemented by the Catholic Church to protect these priests and prevent them from appearing before Justice.

“The Karadima thing hurts me a lot, the abuse is horrible. But what hurts me the most is the response of those who had to protect and care for us, who became our worst enemies,” Cruz tells Whatisfind Which of These Games was once Banned by the catholic church?.

Which of These Games was once Banned by the catholic church?

In 1764 during the Synod of Santiago de Chile, presided over by Bishop Manuel de Alday, the church denounced the Palin as a game that gave occasion to the promiscuity of sexes, since it was played by both men and women, having been prohibited in the Synod of Santiago de Chile of 1688.

Answer: the Catholic Church did not approve of many things in those days. One such thing was backgammon, which they banned during the XVI century. They ordered all the tables to be burned, as well as numerous books they considered ungodly. Fortunately, people managed to save the game from destruction by playing in secret. This is also the time when folding backgammon boards were invented. Backgammon enthusiasts began to make backgammon boards that resembled books so that the church could not find them. The design was quite good and has remained in use even today.

“Torture” and ” cover-up”

This Friday, the UN Committee Against Torture is listening in Geneva to testimonies about abuses and potential torture, prior to the session on Monday and Tuesday, in which it will receive and interrogate representatives of the Holy See. Last January it was the children’s Rights Committee of the same organization that put the Church on the bench.

“The Holy See is one of the 155 States Parties to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and is obliged to undergo regular reviews of its registration before the Commission of 10 independent experts,” the UN explained in a statement on the reasons for the session.

One of the most important reports that the committee has collected comes from the Center for Constitutional Law (CCR), representing the network of survivors abused by priests (SNAP), which groups more than 12,000 victims-and talks about the abuse of priests in Latin America, where the Catholic Church has the greatest presence and influence.

The report – a special annex to the 123-page original detailing cases of sexual violence, psychological abuse and other actions that would amount to torture, allegedly carried out by church members around the world-shows “examples of heinous cases and evidence of concealment” by the Church in Latin America.

“There is enough evidence that there is a big problem in Latin America. The cases we highlight clearly show a network of different bishops in different countries. Everyone knew what was happening and did not want to cooperate with the authorities. Meanwhile, children and others were left in the hands of abusers,” Pam Spees, CCR lawyer in charge of the report, told BBC Mundo.

The attached report on Latin America names priests and bishops involved in the alleged protection network. And on Friday, in a private session, it is planned that the most emblematic ones will be mentioned.

“Pope Francis is from the region, obviously there are questions about how much he knew, his role and why he has put questioned priests in positions of power. It’s a powerful message,” says Katie Gallager, CCR lawyer in charge of presenting the cases in Geneva.

The last three popes, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis, have condemned the abuses and asked for public forgiveness from the victims.

“Are we ashamed? So many scandals that I do not want to mention singularly, but that we all know which (…) Scandals, which some have had to pay dearly: and that’s fine! It should be done so (…) They are the shame of the Church!”, said Pope Francis in a homily last January, shortly before the verdict of the Committee for the rights of children condemning the abuses.

The Vatican’s previous report to the committee made no reference to abuse or cases of paedophilia.

The document states that Cardinal Francisco Errázuriz received a formal complaint in mid-2003, paro tried to persuade the aggrieved to withdraw the charges. When they insisted, the cardinal suspended the investigation for three years and then referred it to the Vatican. It was only in 2011, when some victims made the case public with the intention of making criminal charges, that there was some kind of reaction.

His successor, Ricardo Ezzati, is also mentioned in the report for “doing nothing about the allegations for years” and “for obstruction of justice in another case”.

Although both bishops have been openly questioned and investigated by the judiciary, Pope Francis named Ezatti cardinal last February and Errázuriz, a member of the select group of eight Cardinals charged with reforming the curia.

“Chile is an emblematic case, because it is a clear example that bishops ‘marked’ for participating in the Protection Network, have been awarded by the Pope. And for this Pope,” says Juan Carlos Cruz.

Finally, Karadima ” was withdrawn to a life of prayer and penance by the Vatican.” The report highlights that he remains a priest and was recently seen celebrating masses in public, which is prohibited.
