United States: Google could lay off its employees refusing to be vaccinated

They must present proof of vaccination before 12 January. Otherwise, they risk being placed on leave before a possible dismissal.

Google does not want any more unvaccinated in its ranks. According to CNBC , an internal memo provides for a series of coercive measures against American employees refusing the vaccine. Google is thus putting pressure on the recalcitrant.

Since December 3, the employees of the American giant must present proof of vaccination or a medical or religious certificate of exemption. The group believes that the policy of increasing the number of tests is not acceptable. They have until 12 January to do so.

After this date , without this proof, the employee will be placed on paid administrative leave for 27 days. If the employee persists in his refusal, he will then be placed on unpaid leave for a period of up to 6 months. Then, a dismissal can be decided.

Pressure

Asked by The Verge , a spokesperson for Google explains: “As we have already stated, our vaccination requirements are one of the most important ways to ensure the safety of our staff and keep our services running. We are committed to doing everything possible to help our employees who may be vaccinated to do so and strongly support our vaccination policy. ”

According to CNBC, Google will nevertheless offer solutions for the unvaccinated through positions not affected by this obligation, especially when teleworking is possible.

Remember that Google is in fact anticipating a federal law carried by Joe Biden who introduced the vaccination obligation by January 4 for all employees of companies with more than 30 people.

The law of compulsory vaccination is n pending

But this measure is now pending, the New Orleans Court of Appeal has indeed considered that it “greatly exceeds” the authority of the administration. This decision comes after a similar judgment, handed down last week and which suspended this measure.

The Mountain View group is not the only one in the United States to impose the vaccination of employees. CVS pharmacies, the Chevron oil company, Disney or the Goldman Sachs bank …, require all or part of their employees to provide proof that they have been vaccinated.

Cities are also taking very strong measures. On December 6, the mayor of New York , Bill de Blasio, announced that all employees in the private sector would be subject to compulsory vaccination against the coronavirus. The measure will apply from 14 next December.
