TGV, TER: the four barriers holding back SNCF's competitors

Just two years after the theoretical and irreversible start of the process of opening up national rail services to competition, several candidates have come forward, but very few have found the right fit. With the exception of Trenitalia, which has just launched two daily round trips against the SNCF on Paris-Lyon-Milan, and of Transdev, which has been appointed to operate the TER on the Marseille-Nice line in the summer 2025. For SNCF challengers, entry barriers abound.
