Airbus has just signed a contract like no other. “Unlike usual, we are the equipment manufacturers of a start-up and not the other way around”, underlines the head of the satellite division of Airbus Defense and Space, Jean-Marc Nasr. The European aeronautical manufacturer has indeed been selected by the Franco-American start-up Loft Orbital, which sells turnkey satellite services, to provide it with its 15 next satellite platforms. Loft Orbital chose the small Arrow satellite model, the one that Airbus had developed for the OneWeb constellation.

This contract, whose undisclosed amount remains modest compared to large geostationary satellites, marks the beginnings of a new space environment, where large groups cooperate more with start-ups and vice versa. “It validates the government’s strategy to develop a new dynamic space innovation ecosystem , commented the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, pilot of the France recovery plan 2022, which devotes 1.5 billion euros of investment in the space sector.
