Our review of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the long-awaited return

Spider-Man: No Way Home … Where to start? Like you, I awaited with undisguised impatience the release of the third installment of the Adventures of Spider-Man by Jon Watts. And I was not disappointed with the trip. I had the chance to attend the premiere of the film this morning. Here is my review of Spider-Man: No Way Home , spoiler-free guaranteed . So you can read without worrying about your movie theater experience ruined.

Spider-Man Returns, Finally!

Finally discovering Spider-Man: No Way Home , it’s a bit like Christmas when you’re a child in my eyes. We make our list to Santa Claus, we write down all the gifts we hope to find under the tree but the doubt is present: “would I be entitled to all the gifts that I asked for? Have I been wise enough? Or will I discover, horrified, a piece of coal under the Christmas tree? ”

When you enter the dark room, it’s like the morning of Christmas when we were little. We wake up, overexcited, we run down the stairs to discover our gifts but the doubt persists. What is there under the tree?

Since the time we have been waiting to discover the rest of the adventures of Jon Watts’ Peter Parker, we have been able to imagine long, wide and across what this third part would reserve for us. With the images of the shooting and the release of the trailers, the theories were only fueled. So what about?

Welcome to the multiverse

After making his appearance in the series Loki on Disney +, the arrival of the multiverse on the big screen offers a field of almost infinite possibilities. Since the time we talked about it, it was time to bring it to the big screen. And the question that is on everyone’s lips a few hours before the official release of Spider-Man: No Way Home is: will these theories prove to be true? I can’t tell you anything, so as not to spoil the experience. I know how sacred it is. I will therefore do my best to share with you my feelings about Spider-Man: No Way Home . Without spoilers . It goes without saying…

Let’s do a little recap ‘before getting to the heart of the matter. Remember, at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home , a Spider-Man was left quite pissed off after Mysterio revealed his true identity to the world before he take his last breath. Making our favorite Spider-Man New York’s public enemy number 1, and the favorite target of J. Jonah Jameson, the annoying Daily Bugle reporter.

Faced with this life completely turned upside down, Peter Parker flounders and his relatives suffer. He ends up asking Doctor Strange for help in erasing collective memory. With a few exceptions midway through. Yep, Peter doesn’t want MJ to forget who he is or what they’ve been through. The same for Ned. And Aunt May. In short, his indecision upsets the fate of the Supreme Sorcerer and confuses space-time. The door is wide open for the supervillains that we know well but that our current Peter Parker has not yet had the pleasure of meeting: Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, Sandman, the Lizard or even Electro. In short, a nice skewer on the program. Every action has consequences and it could well destroy the universe. Just that …

A deserved craze for the best superhero in the MCU?

Yes, Spider-Man: No Way Home caused in me, and in others, an infatuation similar to that sparked by the release of Avengers: Endgame in April 2016. So obviously, I had pretty high expectations. And so far, I was not disappointed. Far from there. We find with immense pleasure Peter, MJ, Ned, May, Happy… The fans will clearly be served with this new opus. Once again, the actors are excellent at their roles, which almost stick to their skin.

From 2016 and Captain America: Civil War , Tom Holland brilliantly appropriated the Spider-Man costume. The naive young teenager grows up and becomes a more mature and deep hero in this latest installment. The British actor does a wonderful job of bringing out the human side of the local spider. And if you needed more proof to say that yes, Spider-Man is Marvel’s best superhero, she’s right here! The craze is well deserved for this new film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Let’s not forget that Spider-Man is just a kid with powers (and responsibilities) that are beyond him.

The rest of the team is not left out since Zendaya (MJ), Jacob Batalon (Ned) or Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) are just as excellent and pleasant to watch. And don’t even let me tackle the Tom Holland / Zendaya duo, we’ll have it for a while!

little nostalgia?

If you wanted to fall back into childhood, that’s ideal. Because this third installment plunges us both into the future and the continuation of the adventures of Spider-Man, of course, but with a foot well anchored in the past.

Yes, we are therefore entitled to a good whiff of nostalgia with the appearance of the villains who punctuated the previous sagas and rocked our childhood. Indeed, let us remember that Doctor Octopus is still played by Alfred Molina and that the Green Goblin is still played by Willem Dafoe. The two actors were already present during the Spider-Man trilogy proposed by Sam Raimi between 2000 and 2007.

Special mention to Willem Dafoe, always so disturbing in Green Goblin. An antagonist as we like them. As for Jamie Foxx, he takes over and becomes Electro again after having already taken on this role in 2007 in The Amazing Spider-Man: The Fate of a Hero by Marc Webb. The characters of The Lizard (especially) and Sandman are relatively neglected in favor of the three other villains I just told you about. At the same time, five antagonists, that’s a lot. But we don’t shy away from our pleasure!

A film made for fans

If the fans will get their money’s worth, newbies will find themselves in awe of Spider-Man: No Way Home . Because if all the films of the MCU are interconnected, some can, more or less, watch each other without having seen the rest (with a few references, we can imagine). But with this third installment of Spider-Man , it’s very different. Don’t plan on enlisting your relatives who don’t know anything about the MCU: they probably won’t understand much about the film. With references and easters eggs , Spider-Man: No Way Home can look like a big “private joke” in the eyes of novices. We will have warned you…

Finally, the feat of Spider-Man: No Way Home is to make us pass by literally every possible emotion. Laughter, tears, fear, anger… You can feel a multitude of things in two hours and twenty-eight minutes and you want more. Not out of breath for two cents by what we have just experienced. It’s a great show with a well-balanced balance between frankly funny moments and others much more touching. Without falling into the honeyed either.

As for the photography and special effects of Spider-Man: No Way Home , they are up to the task, as they are mastered. We simply take full eyes of it and we rejoice. The arrival of the multiverse also creates pretty visual possibilities and that, we are takers!

Verdict: it is yes for Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Finally, we are sure: fans of Spider-Man, and the MCU, will love Spider- Man: No Way Home . It is clearly a nice present at the foot of the tree, just a few days before Christmas. Jon Watts has, it seems, found the magic recipe for this final part of the adventures of Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is to be discovered in the dark rooms from tomorrow, Wednesday 12 December. Go for it, go for it, go for it! One thing is certain, be careful on social networks because we bet that the spoilers will fly. A little digital detox while waiting to have seen this last opus, here is our evening prescription.
