Mercato: OM surveyed Nicolás Tagliafico, from Ajax

Jorge Sampaoli would dream of attracting Nicolás Tagliafico, the Argentinian International from Ajax, to Marseille to play in the left lane of OM. The track has been activated, but the dossier is very complicated.

The track may turn out to be surprising, and very ambitious for Olympians’ finances. OM and especially their coach Jorge Sampaoli have targeted a renowned full-back to play on the left side of the Olympian defence: Nicolas Tagliafico! Sampaoli confided last week, at a press conference, that he wanted to strengthen his squad with a left-back, whose profile would be similar to that of Pol Lirola, to allow OM to adapt their system of play, and sometimes to align two very offensive pistons, corridor specialists. According to our information, the Argentinian coach quickly expressed a “love at first sight” wish, and discussed the name of Tagliafico with Pablo Longoria.

A difficult case… but reactivated this summer in case of failure?

Sampaoli had Tagliafico (36 selections) under his orders, with Argentina, notably during the FIFA Cup. world in Russia, and the two men have maintained a good relationship. However, the game promises to be very delicate for the Marseille leaders. Tagliafico, who will be out of contract in June 2023, is an important and recognized player for the Dutch club. The timing is complicated, with the prospect for the player of 29 years to play in February in the knockout stages of the Champions League (against Benfica), in a team of the ‘Ajax attractive.

And the competition is fierce, with in particular a few English clubs which follow Tagliafico closely. A first approach has nevertheless taken place on the part of OM, which can only offer a loan with an option to buy. The Marseille club knows that it will be very difficult to convince the player to sign this winter… But Marseille could come back to the charge this summer, if the deal proves impossible during this winter transfer window, and if OM do not find until then his rare pearl to evolve on the left side.
