Ligue 1: “We have a sense of humor but …”, Bordeaux terminates its contract with Winamax

The Girondins have decided to end their partnership with their main sponsor Winamax. They believe that the online poker site “had dissociated itself” from the club in its communication, especially during the defeat against OM.

Decidedly busy news at the Girondins. On the field and behind the scenes. Bordeaux announced on Friday the termination of its partnership signed last summer with Winamax. This contract was to go until 2024.

“It’s a new strategy, explained this Friday at a press conference the club’s deputy general manager, Thomas Jacquemier. This does not disrupt the club’s budget, which is closed for the season. This means that we are today terminating our partnership contract with Winamax. Lately, their communication has was dissociated from the club through videos and tweets, especially during the last match (1-0 defeat against OM). This is neither in line with the spirit of a partnership as we conceive it, nor in line with our contract. We are taking this opportunity to highlight our foundation and more positive elements.”

Winamax, online poker and sports betting site, displayed until now on the front of the Girondins jersey. It will be replaced this weekend for the match in Rennes by the logo of the club foundation, “Coeur Marine & Blanc”, which works around three major causes: health, childhood and social inclusion.

“We have humor but there…”

“We had recorded a certain number principles in our contract that were not respected. Winamax had arrived in a previous strategy. We had discussions with them. What we expect from a sponsor is that they support us. The jersey des Girondins de Bordeaux, it’s a story, values, not just a billboard. We have humor, of course, but here we are not in the spirit of a partnership. We are on other thing. That’s why we cancel. We know that from time to time we deserve to be criticized or chastised. But here, we are on the defense of a shirt that represents a story. When you are a sponsor of ‘a club, we support it, it’s not more complicated than that,’ supported Thomas Jacquemier.

Pointed to place in Ligue 1 before his trip to Brittany on Sunday, Bordeaux decided this week to sideline two players of the professional group: Mehdi Zerkane and Paul Baysse. Laurent Koscielny, he was urged to find a way out this winter. For its part, Winamax reacted in its own way to the end of this partnership. With, inevitably, a good dose of chambering on his Twitter account.
