Let Him Go, Reviews

Let Him Go, Following the loss of their son, a retired sheriff and his wife leave their Montana ranch to rescue their young grandson from the clutches of a dangerous family living off the grid in the Dakotas.

Let Him Go is a 2020 thriller by Thomas Bezucha starring Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Lesley Manville.

Let Him Go

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane team up again as husband and wife in this movie adaptation of a novel by Larry Watson. The pair slide into these characters with natural ease, after having played two similar characters together in Man of Steel. Costner convincingly plays the strong and silent retired sheriff, after decades of playing a similar character (ie: Wyatt Earp, The Bodyguard, et alia).

But the great acting does not end with them. All the actors gave excellent performances. Especially Donovan, who drew me in with his portrayal of a 1960s small town midwesterner in both demeanor and appearance. The 1960s is really captured with all the old cars, diners, and comb over haircuts.

The plot is simple and predictable, but contains many tense, uncomfortable, and suspenseful moments as the Blackledges try to recover their grandson from a violent and unpredictable family. The ending seemed a little incongruent (I won’t expatiate so I don’t spoil), but the movie is entertaining overall.

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane lose their son in the novel, and at least try to protect their grandson.

In September 1951, it was a few years ago that retired Sheriff George Blackledge (Kevin Costner) and his wife Margaret (Diane Lane) of North Dakota lost their son James after falling from a horse. But her grandson Jimmy keeps the memory of the deceased alive.

James’ widow Lorna (Kayli Carter), however, has left and has brought in a new man who can’t be fun: the criminal Donnie Weboy (Will Brittain). Through him, the aging couple sees their grandchild in danger. So George and Margaret set off on a journey through Dakota and Montana to find their youngest family member and take them home. The Weboy clan, of course, does not want to give up the boy so easily.
