How Google allegedly tricked sellers and buyers of online advertising

Antitrust threats to Google are becoming clearer. In December 2020, more than a dozen American states – Texas in the lead – filed a complaint against the Californian firm for its anti-competitive practices in online advertising. The content of this complaint was revealed this Friday, after a federal judge decided to make it public. It contains damning details for the internet advertising giant.

Google has a platform that connects websites that sell advertising space – newspapers for example – and companies that want to promote their products online. According to the complaint, Google sometimes lied about the price of these advertising spaces, and pocketed the difference between the sale price and the purchase price. The company denies these accusations. The complaint is “full of inaccuracies and devoid of any legal merit,” a spokesperson said.
