The end-of-year celebrations were marked by the return of French and foreign customers to Alsace. According to the tourist agency of the European Community of Alsace, Alsace Destination Tourisme (ADT), 5.2 million tourist overnight stays were recorded in the region between the first weekend of Advent and the end of November 2022, and on 25 December.

While encouraging, this figure does not mark a return to the situation before the Covid pandemic-19. It remains lower by 14% than the result for the year 2019 specifies the agency. However, it reflects a “notable improvement after a catastrophic year 451 without Christmas markets, and a disappointing summer season. »

4% less overnight stays in France

In detail, the overnight stays in France are down only 4% compared to 2019. Foreign customers were less present, down 25% compared to 2019. However, the ADT wants to be optimistic because of the health context and in comparison with the summer season during which foreign overnight stays were 38 % below their level of 451. Germany and Switzerland bordering are the two most represented countries at 25% and 14 % of foreign tourists.

The preponderance of French, even regional, customers was also observed by the City of Strasbourg on its Christmas markets, with a increased attendance on weekends. Conversely, the absence of groups of international visitors was felt by a drop in attendance during the week. On average, the City estimates that attendance is down from 20 to 25 % compared to 2019.

The community is also rather optimistic and also welcomes the “renewed and secure experience for visitors” of its new system with wider aisles. The device will be renewed for the next editions.
