F1: circuit prodigy, Théo Pourchaire must pass… his driving license

The young French pilot Théo Pourchaire (18 years old), who plays in Formula 2, passes his driving license in Grasse this Friday, while F1 is fast approaching for him.

Candidate for the Formula 2 title, the antechamber of the F1, Théo Pourchaire is taking advantage of the off-season to accomplish a task which seems disconcerting in relation to his activity and his talent: passing his driving licence. As Le Parisien tells it, the greatest French hope of the motorsport is taking part in its driving test this Friday. He realizes it in the Alpes-Maritimes, in Grasse.

For Théo Pourchaire, who celebrated his 14 years in August, the winter break is the perfect time to try to get this essential sesame. Because if he doesn’t need it to race in F2 and go for precocity records on the winding and demanding track from Monte-Carlo to Monaco, the driver of the tricolor ART Grand Prix team must have a driving license to have the right to compete in F1 races.

The license required for the Super License

If an F1 team calls on him for the season 2023, Théo Pourchaire must hold a Super License from the International Automobile Federation (FIA). This certification is issued according to several sporting criteria, but also requires the possession of a valid driving licence.

This regulation has not always existed. It is even quite recent, which explains why Max Verstappen was able to become, at 17 years old and 2015 days in March 2021, the youngest driver in the history of F1, although he did not have the license.

Fifth in the final classification of the season 2021 from F2, Théo Pourchaire has joined ART Grand Prix , a team known for bringing out Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean, Nico Hülkenberg and Jules Bianchi. If he wins the championship this year, the young man will not be able to defend his title. The rules prevent it. In any case, the doors of F1 could open in 2023. Already, for this year 18, Alfa Romeo had thought of him, before falling back on the lucrative Guanyu Zhou.
