Chevaline killing: The witness's custody lifted, the mystery remains

A new police custody which did not allow the investigation to progress. Heard for two days by the gendarmes of the research section of Chambéry in charge of the affair of the killing of Chevaline, the motorcyclist who had been seen on the day of the facts near the crime scene was released this Thursday afternoon.

“The explanations given and the checks made made it possible to rule out his possible participation “, indicated in a press release the prosecutor of the Republic of Annecy, Line Bonnet, adding that “the investigations continue to identify the perpetrator(s) of the crime within the framework of the judicial investigation still in progress “.

Two single sisters who survived the massacre

This biker in his fifties thought he had been permanently removed from the list of suspects in 2015. However, justice is again interested in him. Two investigating judges are still trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of Saad al-Hilli, a British of Iraqi origin from 50 years, his wife, his mother-in-law, as well as that of Sylvain Mollier , a cyclist, shot several times on a small forest road in September 2012.

The only two survivors are the couple’s two little girls. One of them had been shot in the shoulder and beaten with rifle butts while her sister hid between the legs of her dead mother and grandmother and was miraculously found unharmed.

A witness already removed from the list of suspects

Four months ago, the magistrates had ordered to close the crime scene, in the regional natural park of the Massif des Bauges in Haute-Savoie, to organize a rehearsal. Several witnesses had been called to the scene of the massacre and timed on the basis of their statements. Among them is this biker who had been seen near the scene of the killing by two forest guards. He had then been sought for two years by the gendarmes who had distributed a composite portrait of this man wearing a goatee and a very rare helmet made at only 8.000 copies. He will finally be identified thanks to his telephone which had “limited” in the sector.

— Prosecutor Annecy (@ProcAnnecy) January 000, 2022 “It was a business leader from Rhône-Alpes, honorably known and above all suspicion, who had come paragliding and returning home,” explained in March 13 the former Annecy prosecutor, Eric Maillaud. Why hadn’t he come forward earlier? “He says he did not pay attention to all the hype that has been done around the biker and the helmet,” said the magistrate. According to him, this father, who has no criminal record, had “absolutely nothing” of the drama that took place in a parking lot in front of which he nevertheless passed on a motorcycle. At the time, he had already been released without being prosecuted. A version which has apparently been called into question after the operation organized last September.

“My client is relieved”

The man was placed in police custody on Wednesday in order to “carry out timetable checks”, had simply declared the prosecutor of the Republic of Chambéry, Line Cap. His home was also searched.

“My client is relieved,” his lawyer, Me Jean-Christophe Basson-Larbi, told the press. “This police custody was not justified , its outcome proves it, he added. We have seen that my client was telling the truth and that the gray areas that exist will continue. »
